My name is John Lucas. I live near Portland, Oregon and I just retired from teaching after 35 years in July. I grew up in the Seattle area on the shores of Lake Washington in the 1950s and 60s. Our family had a number of boats over the years including sailboats, runabouts, rowboats, and kayaks. My father used to let me help him periodically sand, paint and fiberglass our wooden boats. I have positive memories of those times we spend together. I did not build my first boat until a year and half ago, but I think he planted the seed many years ago. In the last couple of years, I have built a Minimost and two Glen-L boats-a Super Spartan and just recently a 11 ft Squirt. I love the challenge of creating something out of nothing, working with my hands and getting totally absorbed in the process.
